I smiled every time I looked at my reflection in the mirror with the necklace on. It looked so gorgeous and unreal.
My mother was definitely getting suspicious. She asked me where I got the necklace from and I told her it was an old graduation present that I'd forgotten about.
I began to feel really bad for lying but I would feel really bad if I told her the truth too.
"Yallah yuma ana mashya ba'3aitay shay?" I told her as I hugged her before I walked out of the living room.
"La wallah bas salmay 3ala Layal," she said.
"Yo9al inshallah," I told her. I'd tell Layal that when I first see her in college as soon as I got back. That thought of going back to college depressed me, it was like back to reality.
I quickly got out of the house just to not keep Zaid waiting. He arrived exactly at 4 PM as we'd agreed on and looked pretty hot in his aviator sunglasses and gray sweater as he smiled at me while I got in the car.
"Ahlan," I said first. He bit his lip while smiling, which nearly drove me crazy.
"Shfeek?" I said with a laugh.
"I like your necklace," he said.
"It9adig kilish ma 3ajabni?" I teased as I held it between my fingers.
"Akhithlich wa7id thani," he said. I really think he'd do it, oh God I'd die of embarrassment.
"Zaid la2!" I nearly yelled and he laughed.
"Okay khala9, wallah," he said as he turned up the music.
"Shinu tabeen min Starbucks?" he asked me as he went to the drive thru.
"Ay shay bas mu mocha," I said, and he turned at me briefly while raising his brow. I laughed and explained to him that the mocha I'd tasted in France changed my taste in coffee and he laughed. I just told him to get me what he was getting; he had good taste. In literally everything.
He got us two java chip frappucinos with a shot of espresso, and it surprisingly tasted really good.
"Bas e7na bnkoon hnak 9a7?" I asked him.
"Ee," he said as he switched lanes.
We spent the rest of the ride half in silence as I played snapchat stories on my phone and the other half talking to him about movies we'd seen. Apparently we shared the opposite tastes. He loved horror and action while I loved romance and chick-flicks. Okay maybe he did not good taste in everything.
"Maku middle ground, ha?" he asked with a chuckle.
"La2 bas a7san li2ana y'6aye3 wagtna," I said as I leaned back on my seat.
We finally reached his chalet as he pulled up outside in the empty garage. I tried not to look at Lulu's chalet next door. He took his cane from the backseat as I followed him inside the chalet, which looked gorgeous inside as on the outside.
The interior was mostly various shades of gray and pops of color like yellow, blue, and pink. The main living room, which was huge, was looking over the swimming pool and the sea, the first floor was open to the living room.
"Omniyah shtishribeen?" Zaid asked me as he looked at the fridge in the mini kitchen next to the living room.
I shook my Starbucks drink at him and he came back with a bottle of water for me anyway.
"Shrayik nig3ad bara? Bt'3eeb ilshams," I told him. We walked outside to the patio, next to the pool as we sat in silence and just looked at the painted sky with the sun nestling over the top of the sea.
Zaid looked at me and smiled, and I smiled back as we watched the sunset go down. We didn't speak much but our company was enough to speak for itself. I looked to my left, where Lulu's chalet was and my heart sped up I might have seen someone. Hatha ili nagi9.
"Fee a7ad eb chalet Lulu?" I asked Zaid. He tried to peek at their chalet.
"Madri wallah, tabeen indish?" he asked me.
"Yallah, bida y9eer '6alma anyway," I told him.
We walked back inside but prayed first before sitting again in the living room.
I looked at Zaid and smiled at him as he fixed up the TV.
"Zaid?" I said.
"Na3am?" he replied as he brought a bowl of mixed nuts in front of us.
"Shnu bl thab6 i7na?" I asked him. I realized my question was so weirdly put. Zaid cocked his eyebrow in confusion
"What's between us?" I asked him.
He smiled when he began to speak, but my phone rang. It was my mother.
Shit.
"Hala yuma?" I said and Zaid silenced the TV. I could tell he was panicking too as he didn't know where to stand.
"Wainich?" she asked me.
"Ma3a Layal ib bait'ha," I said. I bit my lip as I avoided looking at Zaid who tried to avoid looking at me.
"'3areeba Lulu daga 3alay itgool intay bl shalaih," she said.
"Haw shalaih minu?" I asked. If my heart could beat any faster it would pop out right now.
"Shalaih Al-M," she said. I froze. Zaid's chalet.
"Oo ana shaku feehum?" I asked my mom, trying to sound believable.
"Ee bl '6ab6, '3al6ana 3ayal. Yallah sorry ga6a3tkum," she said before hanging up.
My mouth was dry and my heart was still pounding.
"Omniyah?" Zaid said as he sat next to me.
"Lulu shaftna. Shit, Zaid, Lulu shafatna oo galat 7ag ummi," I said. I was about to burst into tears. I hated that girl. What was wrong with her? If she had an issue with that she'd talk to me and not my mother. And what happened to her "maby aza3l khalti".
And since we didn't speak anymore, ihya shaku feeni? Something was definitely up.
"Tabeeni arou7 ashouf shlsalfa?" Zaid said.
I shook my head. "La2 it's fine."
"Tabeen inrid?" he asked me, as much as I wanted to stay I had to say yes.
We left the chalet silently and got in his car as he sped past Lulu's chalet. I hated her. I hated her so much and the thought of losing Zaid and disappointing my mother made me so angry and nervous that I wanted to throw up.
Zaid looked at me from the corner of his eye. Tears were streaming down my face and I couldn't help it. I hoped our end wasn't near.
He was the reason I was happy, I lost half my family but I gained a person worth even more, and who knows how much he thought of me? I resisted the urge to hold his hand and make him confident in what we had, whatever it was.
"Omniyah please," he begged as he couldn't see me cry.
"Magdar akhsirich ba3ad."
